Miscellaneous Insurance The Insurance Act defines ‘Miscellaneous' insurance business, in the style of a residual category, as consisting of all business other than contracts classified as 'Fire,' 'Marine’ or 'Life Insurance business. The ‘Miscellaneous' portfolio has grown with time and now consists of a vast variety of products which are organized in several distinct and well recognized lines of business. It is difficult to say which of these is the most important, but certainly some of them are bigger than others in terms of business volumes, some have greater visibility and customer recall because of their utility, yet others because of their strategic role in economic and industrial activity. The chart presented in Figure 18 is a diagrammatic representation of the Miscellaneous Portfolio and its various categories. The segmentation of the portfolio into ‘Retail,' 'Corporate and ‘Government business is one way of viewing Miscellaneous business.
